What newspaper and frequency of delivery is best for ads and circulars?
Sarah R asked:
My boyfriend and I are about to move into a rental house together. Money is going to be pretty tight, so we really want to be able to look at all of the ads and circulars to check out sale prices on food, cleaning products, toiletries, etc. We can read most of the news articles we want to read online, so this is mostly about the ads.
Which newspaper is better for this, the Detroit News, Detroit Free Press, or Oakland Press? Detroit News and Detroit Free Press both have three options: 7-day, 4-day (Thursday-Sunday), or just Sunday. Oakland Press has 7-day, 4-day (Thursday-Sunday) or 2-day (Thursday & Sunday), as well as an online edition.
Which paper and delivery option is best for ads? Do most ads just come on Sunday anyway, or are there some every day? Can you look at the ads in the online edition of the Oakland Press? It’s significantly cheaper. We only want to spend enough money to get what we need out of a paper and nothing more, but we really don’t know what we’re doing!

Detroit Free Press
The Free Press Sunday edition.
I just go on line to check out the ads for free.
Meijer.com
Kmart.com
Walmart.com
Kroger.com Each site has current ads you just need to enter you zip code.
Get the Thursday- Sunday Free Press… it has the most coupons and ads. There are specials that the carriers have to insert on those days that are strictly for Free Press Subscribers. If you can, wait until you go to a grocery store and if you see someone in the front of the store with a display saying something like “win a free gift card”, they are going to ask you if you subscribe to the Detroit Free Press. They usually have the best deals this time of year but if you can’t wait, e-mail me and tell me what area/ city you are in and I will give you the number to your local carrier’s area and they can set you up with any specials they may have going on. Calling the 1-800 number on the paper is usually the most expensive way to start a subscription but it really is about a 65-95 cent difference a week depending on the plan you get.
