Why are some people so concerned with same sex marriage? It’s like we are the Great Satan or something?
for da ben dan juan asked:
Sometimes I read newspapers online and I came across this one letter in the Lowell Sun (Massachusetts). This lady was kind of up in arms about protecting children and that SSM would expose kids to the FACT that homosexuals exist and it was like exposing kids to the plague or something. I was reding along, she thinks we should have the the rights and protection but don’t call it a marriage for the standard reasons, Bible, Tradition, and so on. I was getting really ticked off. No one seems to remember the early Christian church had a same sex marriage ceremony, that marrige was reserved for the wealthy and everyone else just shacked up. Revisionist history, sheesh! So I get to the end of the letter and I read her name. Then I had to clean Sprite off my monitor.
I digress, Shakespeare said whats in a name? A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. So, why is it so important to deny SSM for Biblical reasons, tradition, ect when in reality it happened way back then?
Link to the letter, check out her name, just struck me as funny

Those that claim it’s just about the precious “M” word are generally liars. When they say we should all have the same rights and protections, what they really mean is that we’re free to go back into hiding and marry someone of the opposite sex. Fact is that even as they babble on and on publicly about this “sacred” institution, they’re quietly fighting against even the most basic institutions for the protection of our families, like domestic partner registries, and continue to fight against equal benefits, hospital visitation, and inheritance rights.
MARY SEMAN?
Oh, man.
The funny thing is that Gay Marriage happened in Canada…and all the controversy died a slow death…the moral fabric of society has held here…we are still operating like a normal everyday civilized country. After it happens I guess on these crusaders go on to new crusades…anything to give meaning to their lives…..
I doubt that a little change in semantics will satisfy her.
Mary Seman needs a man… Just kiddin’… Seriously, with all due respect to individuals who do not agree with same sex marriage, I too am clueless as to why there has been such anger and passion in opposing its civil right.
To answer CK loves Chimichanga’s concern on how valid the statement: “…, that marriage was reserved to the wealthy and everyone else just shacked up,” can be found in Emile Durkeim’s “Divisions of Labor.”
