What happened with those mysterious fires in Italy?

~midNightmeetsMe~ asked:

Back in 2004 appliances and furniture started catching fire for no reason in the Sicilian village of Canneto di Caronia. I saw it on BBC world news and there was an article in The Scotsman newspaper that I read online. It was really bizzare, they shut off all electricity to the town because they thought it was an electrical problem, and things were still catching on fire. I’m just wondering if anyone else heard about this and knows if they ever found the cause of the fires. Thanks :-)

Most likable cause, flow or compression between two underground rocky layers or considerable water seepage causing compression in deeper stratum; both phenomenon can cause electric field that can be detected even on surface (and cause for short-circuits in electrical devices).
That’s according to Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia di Catania (Catania’s National Geophysics and Volcanology Institute).
